Jonas
Ernest Apfelbaum was the oldest son of Jacob and Molly Apfelbaum who
had four other children: Alan, Irving, Henrietta, and William.
Sylvia Horn was the only daughter of Max and Ida Horn who had three
other children: Leo, Archie, and Herman. Ernie's best friend
and fellow bandmate, Jack Baker, was dating and eventually married
Mickey who's best friend was Sylvia. Ernie and Sylvia met
through their best friends, dated for seven years, and married in
194? in New York. They lived in Levittown until 1949 when they
moved to Roslyn where they raised their family until 1973 when they
moved to Inverrary, Florida.
They
had three children: Jane (1943), Judy (1947), and Michael
(1950). Before marrying, Sylvia worked at the Hotel Edison
Reception Desk in New York City. After marrying she was a
homemaker, avid reader, and tennis player. By overseeing
extensive and superb coaching of her son and her excellent
communication skills she began a very extensive career as a teaching
pro when she and Ernie moved to Florida. Sylvia was very slim
all her life and was known never to take any medicines, even
aspirin. Sylvia died in 199? on her 73rd birthday from lung
cancer that had spread to her brain.
Ernie
travelled the world on cruise ships with his five piece band as a
young man. He was the front man, singer, and saxophone player
and was often heard playing live on WOR radio in New York. He
received his law degree in 193? but never practiced because of the
severe economic depression at the time. When he married Sylvia
and started a family he found a job selling expensive leather gift
items. He was a very successful sales rep for his entire life
and later on sold picture frames and lastly greeting cards. He
was avidly into music, always having the latest in high fidelity
equipment. His constant wit was very sharp, very dry.
Ernie died in 199? at the age of 8? from pancreatic cancer.
