Michael
Harvey Apfelbaum, born 2/12/1950, Amityville, New York.
Michael was the youngest of 3 borne to Ernie and Sylvia Apfelbaum.
Michael
went to Blair Academy, Blairstown, NJ in September of 1964 until he
graduated in 1968. He was there on a full athletic scholarship
where he earned 4 Varsity Letters in Tennis and 4 Varsity Letters in
Cross Country. He Captained the tennis team, was Editor-in-Chief
of the underform Newspaper, was the youngest Sports Editor ever of
the school Newspaper, the Blair Breeze, as a sophomore, and became
Editor-in-Chief in his senior year. He sang for the Choir, Glee
Club, and earned his way onto the very prestigious "Tweeds,"
a twelve member, acapella, barbershop singing troupe.
In 1968 Michael went to Columbia College in New York City on a Tennis Scholarship and won the Freshman tennis tournament. Prior to his first Varsity season in January of 1970 he transferred to Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, where he played #1 Singles and was undefeated in 3 years of duel matches. He graduated from Bard in the Spring of 1973 with a BA degree in Political Science with a minor in Education.
In 1975 he moved to Florida where he was a Tennis Pro at the North Miami Beach Tennis Center and for the City of Coral Springs. At this time he coached two National Junior Champions, one boy (Van Winitsky) and one girl (Rayni Fox). He married Sharon Murphy (Brattleboro, VT) whom he met at Bard College, was divorced after 5 years, and had no children. In 1977 he legally changed his name from Michael Harvey Apfelbaum to Michael Apfelbaum Harvey.
In
1977 he moved to Atlanta where he spent 22 years teaching tennis and
taking over losing tennis clubs and managing them into
profitability. He owns and operates Pros, Inc., a recreation
management company. He spent 10 years in Marietta, Georgia,
managing Club Pinecrest and Club Circlestone, 8 years in Buckhead
managing the Buckhead Tennis Center and teaching at the Cherokee
Towne Club, and four years in Smyrna as a free lance Tennis Pro.
It was at this time that he put together a series of 5 one-hour
audio tapes entitled "Smart Tennis." They were
transferred into CD's and are now for sale on the Internet at www.TennisInstructionCD.com.
In
1995 he took up Swing Dancing and soon thereafter formed the Atlanta
Swing Dancers Club and owned and edited for 5 years "West Coast
SwingAmerica," a national West Coast Swing Magazine (www.WestCoastSwingAmerica.com).
He taught Swing dancing in Atlanta for five years. In 2000 he
moved to San Ramon, California where he was Coach of several High
School Tennis Teams earning ESPN.com's "Coach of the Week"
and "Quote of the Week" after taking a fourth place
divisional team to a fifth place California state ranking in one
season. Also at this time he began selling nutritional
supplements over the Internet. In 2001 he was hired as General
Manager of Scott Valley Swimming and Tennis Club in Mill Valley,
California, moved to Larkspur and stayed with the club until 2003
when he decided to devote all his time to growing the Internet
business. In 2002 he was hired by Dance Arts Studios, a
prestigious Bay area Ballroom Studio in San Rafael, to be their
"Swing Dance Specialist."
Tennis
Highlights include: #10 National Ranking, 1964, Boys 14
Singles; #1 ETA Ranking, 1966, Boys 16 Singles; 9 times ranked #1 in
Georgia various singles and doubles divisions; numerous National
Rankings in Adult divisions topping out at #10, Mens 40 Singles,
1992; Coach of the Gold Medal winning US Womens Tennis Team at the
14th Maccabiah Games in Israel, 1993; Coach on the Womens
International Tennis Tour 1976; Coach on the Mens Internation Tennis
Circuit, 1985-1986, including Wimbledon and the US Open.
Michael
was always fond of all animals. They would come right up to
him. He had two dogs that were always with him. One was a
Sheltie named Rama and the other was a Border Collie named Lucky.
